The United Arab Emirates Central Cancer Registry (UAECCR) office is located at Tawam Hospital - Al Ain one of the leading centers in the Arab Gulf region for the treatment of cancers.
The Goals of the UAECCR

Establishment of a competent registration system capable of recording 90% of cancer cases diagnosed in the UAE by the year 2005.

Identification of 60% of persons/groups at risk of developing cancer as a result of behavioral, occupational, environmental, and/or genetic factors by the year 2005.

Identification and monitoring of 80% of the most common risk factors that lead to major cancers in the UAE by the year 2005.

With reference to recorded data on cancer mortality in the UAE for the years (1990-1998), it was found that:- -
Cancer was the third leading cause of death in the country preceded only by cardiovascular diseases and accidental injuries.

Of all the reported deaths due to cancer during the last ten years, the most common cancers in order of highest frequency were those of the digestive organs and peritoneum, trachea, bronchus and lung, female breast and cervix uteri.
Cancer Registation:
Is defined as the process of continuing, systematic collection of data on the occurrence and characteristics of reportable neoplasms. -
A Hospital-Based Cancer Registry records all cases in a given hospital, usually without knowledge of thebackground population; temphasis is on clinical care and hospital administration.

A Population-Based Cancer Registry records all new cases in a defined population (most frequently a geographical area) with the emphasis on epidemiology and public health. (IARC).

Active Registration:
Means that the registry staff have to go out and collect information on cases of cancer which come into contact with the health services in every possible way.
